Required Documents
For your first appointment, it is recommended that you bring certain documents with you, as they may be required. The documents needed vary depending on your financial situation.
To find out which documents you may need to provide, please refer to the option below that best describes your situation. This list is not exhaustive, and you may be asked to provide additional documents.
If you have any questions or are unsure which documents to bring, please contact your local legal aid office.
You are:
Recipient of last-resort financial assistance (social assistance)
Non-exhaustive list of documents that may be required when applying for legal aid:
Proof of Benefits
– Regular benefits: Claim booklet issued by the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale for the current month, or, if unavailable, any document confirming that you receive last-resort financial assistance and the amount received
– Severe employment constraints: Claim booklet issued by the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale for the current month, or, if unavailable, any document confirming that you receive benefits under the severe employment constraints program and the amount received
– Employment assistance: Any document confirming that you receive benefits under an employment assistance program and the amount received.
Personal Information
– Social Insurance Number
– Address and telephone number
– Health insurance card
If you are not a Canadian citizen: any official document indicating your status in Canada.
If you are Indigenous: your band number
Documents Related to the Legal Service Requested
Depending on your situation:
– Court documents, application, motion, or notice of hearing
– Summons, subpoena, promise to appear, or statement of offence
– Contract
– Administrative decision or judgment you wish to contest
You are encouraged to contact your local legal aid office before your first appointment to ensure that you have all the required documents.
Salaried employee
Non-exhaustive list of documents that may be required when applying for legal aid:
Proof of Income
Proof of income for the year preceding your application
– Provincial income tax return
– Provincial notice of assessment
Proof of income for the current year
– Most recent pay slip, including the cumulative gross earnings for the current year
– Record of Employment
– Names and addresses of employers or businesses
– Proof of tips received (if these amounts do not appear on your pay slip)
Child Support Received
– Copy of the most recent judgment establishing child support
– Detailed statement from Revenu Québec confirming the amounts received
Income Replacement Benefits
(CNESST, SAAQ, RQAP, IVAC)
– Statement or document indicating the amounts received (gross amounts in the case of RQAP), as well as the start and end dates of payments.
Employment Insurance (Unemployment)
– Statement or document indicating the number of eligible weeks, the gross amount received, and the start and end dates of payments.
Amounts That May Be Deducted from Your Income
Child Support Paid
– Copy of the most recent judgment establishing child support
– Detailed statement from Revenu Québec confirming the amounts paid
Childcare Expenses
– Proof of the amount eligible for the provincial tax credit
Tuition Fees
– Proof of tuition fees deductible under Québec’s Taxation Act
Expenses Related to a Severe Physical or Mental Disability
– Proof showing payment of expenses incurred that were not reimbursed by an insurer or a government program
Proof of Assets and Liquid Assets
– Bank statements for all accounts (chequing, savings, investments, term deposits, RESP, TFSA, RRSP, etc.) for the month preceding your application, as well as the balances of your accounts at the time of your application
If You or Your Spouse Own Property
– Copy of the municipal tax bill for all properties (house, cottage, income property, etc.)
– Proof of the amount received from the sale of a residence
Self-employed worker
Non-exhaustive list of documents that may be required when applying for legal aid:
Proof of Income
Proof of income for the year preceding your application

– Provincial notice of assessment

– Form TP-80
Proof of income for the current year
– Statement of income and expenses for the current year
